Two Approaches to Commonsense Inferencing for Discourse Analysis

چکیده

Abs t rac t : The dominant philosophy regarding the formalization of Commonsense Inferencing in the physical domain consists in the exploitation of the "tarskian" scheme axiomatization <-> interpretation borrowed from mathematical logic. The commonsense postulates constitute the axiomatization, and the real world provides the "model" for this axiomatization. The observation of the effective activity of linguistic communication and of the commonsense inferencing processes which are involved in it show the unacceptability of this scheme. An alternative is proposed, where the notion of "conceptual category" plays a principal role, and where the principle of logical adequation of an axiomatization to a model is replaced by a notion of "projection" of a conceptual structure onto the observed reality.

Commonsense Reasoning with Verbs

KT encodes commonsense knowledge (CK) about entities and relations in a cross-classified Ontology and a database of generic (prototypical and inherent) information. The verb Ontology combines linguistic and psycholinguistic classification. The generic information for verbs encodes typical associations with actions and events. This knowledge base is useful for word-sense disambiguation, inferenc...

L1 Glossing and Lexical Inferencing: Evaluation of the Overarching Issue of L1 Lexicalization

This empirical study reports on a cross-linguistic analysis of the overarching issue of L1 lexicalization regarding two (non)-interventionist approaches to vocabulary teaching. Participants were seventy four juniors at the Islamic Azad University, Roudehen Branch in Tehran. The investigation pursued (i) the impact of the provided (non)-interventionist treatments on both sets of (non)-lexicalize...

RAFT/RAPR and Centering: A Comparison and Discussion of Problems Related to Processing Complex Sentences

Several researchers have noted the local coherence exhibited by discourse (Sidner 1979; Grosz, Joshi, and Weinstein 1983; Carter 1987; etc.). A primary component of this local coherence is the way the local focus of the discourse shifts from one sentence to the next and the way this shifting is marked by linguistic choices made by the writer/speaker. By local focus, we refer to that concept a s...

L2 Learners’ Lexical Inferencing: Perceptual Learning Style Preferences, Strategy Use, Density of Text, and Parts of Speech as Possible Predictors

This study was intended first to categorize the L2 learners in terms of their learning style preferences and second to investigate if their learning preferences are related to lexical inferencing. Moreover, strategies used for lexical inferencing and text related issues of text density and parts of speech were studied to determine their moderating effects and the best predictors of lexical infe...

Procedural Meaning Representation by Connotative Dependency Structures an Empirical Approach to Word Semantics for Analogical Inferencing

Natural language understanding systems make use of language and/or world knowledge bases. One of the salient problems of meaning representation and knowledge structure is the modelling of its acquisition and modiication from natural language processing. Based upon the statistical analysis of discourse, a formal representation of vague word meanings is derived which constitutes the lexical struc...
